The Sailors Roar, Sanfrecce Snores: A Forfeit to Remember

5 March 2025 – Hiroshima, Japan.

A night to forget for the Lion City Sailors turned into a lesson in the power of rules and regulations — and a stunning reversal of fortunes.

The 2024 J1 League runners-up, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, delivered a footballing masterclass, dismantling Singapore Premier League champions Lion City Sailors 6–1 in the first leg of their AFC Champions League Two Quarter-Final match. The result was hardly surprising. Few expected the Sailors to stand toe-to-toe with one of Japan’s elite clubs, and a five-goal deficit all but sealed the Sailors’ fate ahead of the return leg on 12 March.

Or so it seemed.

What the Sailors did not know was that their heavy defeat would soon be erased from the record books. It turned out that Sanfrecce had made a critical error — one that would cost them dearly.

A Costly Oversight

Enter Valere Germain. In the 69th minute, the French forward was substituted on with Sanfrecce cruising at 4–1. He found the net minutes later, adding insult to injury. But there was one problem: Germain wasn’t even supposed to be on the pitch.

Unbeknownst to Sanfrecce — or, at the very least, overlooked — the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee had retrospectively handed Germain a three-match suspension for slapping an opponent in last year’s tournament while playing for his previous club, Australian side Macarthur FC. This ban, however, seemed to have somehow been lost in translation, and Sanfrecce included him in the match day squad and even played him in the match.

The Committee launched an investigation after the match and reached a verdict on 8 March: Sanfrecce were deemed to have forfeited the match. Instead of a 6–1 thrashing, the books now reflected a 3–0 technical victory for the Sailors.

Oh, how the tables had turned.

Mission Possible

Suddenly, the impossible task of overturning a five-goal deficit transformed into a much less impossible (but still very demanding) mission — protect the 3–0 lead at the Jalan Besar Stadium, and the Sailors would reach the Semi-Finals.

And that was exactly what the Sailors did. A spirited defensive display held Sanfrecce to a 1–1 draw, sealing a 4–1 win on aggregate for the Sailors. Just like that, what had seemed like an insurmountable obstacle turned into one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

Conclusion

At this point you might be wondering — why is a law firm talking about football?

Well, much like sport, legal practice is governed by strict rules and procedures, and a single technical oversight can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Sanfrecce’s blunder serves as a powerful reminder: no matter how dominant your position, neglecting the details can cost you everything.
